There are many things to see and do in Fort Lauderdale, both before and after your cruise.

It’s easy to imagine that a cruise is entirety of your vacation—after all, that’s what you’ve planned. However, when your cruise departs from Fort Lauderdale, that doesn’t have to be the case. With 23 miles of pristine beaches, world-class shopping and dining, arts and culture and opportunities to immerse yourself in the natural beauty surrounding you, it’s easy to see the benefit in planning a few days either pre- or post-cruising (or both!) in Fort Lauderdale.

Bask on the Beaches

There’s no question about it: Ft. Lauderdale has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. From the vibrant Hollywood Beach and its iconic boardwalk to the black and white Hillsboro Lighthouse that affords expansive views of the city, there is a beach on this 23 mile  (37 km) stretch that is sure to appeal to you. In addition to simply relaxing under an umbrella and catching some rays, there are also a wide variety of activities available from jet skiing to kayaking to parasailing.

Shop ‘Til You Drop

Whether you’re looking for something specific (perhaps that bathing suit you forgot to pack?) or simply browsing for your next favorite outfit, Fort Lauderdale has the cure for any shopping need. Find famous brands at the Galleria Mall, search for amazing deals at the Sawgrass Mills designer outlets and peek into the boutiques along Las Olas Boulevard for the perfect thing that you had no idea that you needed. It’s retail therapy that will cure any ill.

See the Sights

Known as the the ‘Venice of America,’ Fort Lauderdale is crisscrossed with canals. Mega yachts sail these waterways and marinas with even more vessels dot the shores. Take a sightseeing tour from the water to see the multimillion dollar houses and glimpse the city from a different angle. If you’d prefer a different type of entertainment, be sure to check out one of the cruises aboard the Jungle Queen Riverboat.

Explore the Everglades

If you visit Fort Lauderdale and skip the Everglades, you’re missing one of the most spectacular–and unique–attractions in the area. Take an airboat tour through the ‘river of grass’ and see the wildlife that lives in this spectacular place like alligators, manatees and more. If you have time, be sure to explore the many hiking paths that weave through the national park or set off in a kayak or canoe to be the captain of your own adventure.

Don’t Miss Miami

It would be  shame to be so close to glittering Miami–just a 40 minute drive–and not see this jewel of southern Florida. Take a private Miami city tour and learn about this city’s colorful history and culture firsthand. From pristine beaches to historic art deco architecture to vibrant neighborhoods that give this city its unique flavor, it’s a great way to see one of the most popular cities in Florida.

Whether you choose to spend your time pre- or post-cruise basking in the sun, scooping up deals at the boutiques or exploring the Everglades, it’s clear that there are plenty of reasons to spend a few days in Fort Lauderdale.
